The American Civics test is an examination that all immigrants must pass to gain U.S. citizenship. The test asks 10 randomly selected questions which cover U.S. history, the constitution and government. In 2015 Arizona became the first state to require High School students to pass the test before they graduate.
@ISIDEWITH7yrs7Y
Yes, and it should test more than just a basic level of understanding
@9JZV4S83mos3MO
Nope. Most Americans don't have a basic understanding. Why would we expect more from someone else than we do ourselves?
As a former US History teacher, I can guarantee you that most students would not pass this test without studying. Hell, most Americans could not pass this test right now. Do I think that US History is important and everyone (who lives here) should know at least some of it? Yes, absolutely. But most Americans are wildly undereducation in all social studies because of the intention underfunding of education and the recent attack on what's taught in the classroom. In fact, my best student one year was a German exchange student. Not only did she get a 100 in the class, she contributed so much to conversations and got nearly a perfect score on the state testing. I had 6 students not pass that year (passing score is 40%) out of my almost 200.
@ISIDEWITH7yrs7Y
No, most citizens couldn’t even pass a citizenship test
Deleted8mos8MO
Our schools don't teach our children enough to pass the Citizenship Test. Why should we expect immigrants to know more than our own citizenry?
@9FNVJNP8mos8MO
That is why it is important for immigrants to pass, because at least they have an understanding of the nation. We should not bring more people in that don't know anything, it just makes the nation stupider on average
@ISIDEWITH7yrs7Y
Deleted2yrs2Y
Yes, but only to ensure that they understand our system of government
@85QWNPG2yrs2Y
No, it is absurd to expect them to know all of our history when many American citizens do not, instead focus on skills that could be provided to various sectors via mental acuity tests in their native language. The most important thing is merely the background checks, nothing more is truly relevant to their longterm success here.
@8PY2B9C3yrs3Y
Yes and it should be a high school graduation requirement.
@imp0s5ible4yrs4Y
No, and abolish citizenship
@9DQDX2P9mos9MO
Only if a passed test results in citizenship
Deleted11mos11MO
Yes, and make it a requirement for high school graduation
@93NN8V72yrs2Y
Yes, and high school students should also be required to pass the test before graduating.
@8PX94ZT3yrs3Y
Yes, and so should U.S. citizens
@9CB82KYIndependent12mos12MO
Yes, and require the same for all government employees.
@95YXM3LRepublican2yrs2Y
Yes but it should also be mandatory to graduate from high school
@8RG8BNS3yrs3Y
Yes, but citizens should also be required to take it.
@9BBKWFGIndependent1yr1Y
There already is a civics test, in English, during the naturalization process.
There are, however, waivers and exemptions if a person qualifies for one. Regardless, a civics test exists, there are three components, reading, writing, and speaking the civics test covers important US history and government topics. So this question is moot
@9F4LH359mos9MO
All citizens should be required to pass a citizenship test
@VulcanMan6 9mos9MO
@9CJ6CB68mos8MO
Oh yeah, I got a 90% on that thing actually.
@9BQKHT31yr1Y
Yes, because people come to our country and expect us to treat them as 100% equal, and anything other than 100% kindness or gratefulness is racist, but go to their country, there is a good chance that they will not treat you with the kindness and respect that they expect from us.
@VulcanMan6 1yr1Y
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
@9BN5D2K1yr1Y
United States should only accept white immigrants of high IQ who are already skilled workers and this should not have to pass a rigorous test
@VulcanMan6 1yr1Y
This is just blatantly racist, and something tells me you wouldn't be able to pass this anyway...
@LuckyChucky411Democrat3yrs3Y
For what purpose? This question is poorly worded.
Historically tests like this have been slanted in racist ways and used to further the goals of institutional racism. While this information is important it needs to be insured that it’s being done fairly and with egalitarian goals in mind
@8G67WCD4yrs4Y
@9MMFML617hrs17H
Yes, and every High School student should take the test and pass to be able to graduate like Arizona, even if they are already a registered US citizen
@9MM3NNB24hrs24H
i dont think they should have to take a test to prove they know about the country, they should just have to sign legal papers to make it official and take an oath
@9MLD64CIndependent 2 days2D
No, it is pointless and the people who proctor these tests give citizenship to almost all of them. Also the test is super easy
@Politics_534 days4D
Yes but it should only cover basic informative topics such as testing them on the rights, how the government branches are and understanding of how to get around such a ft to meters and driving test until we can be a more walk-able country.
@9MH47QN6 days6D
It is between yes and no. The Citizenship test is just a history test. The country's language IS NOT just English, America doesn't have a main language.
@9MGKWV37 days7D
I think they should get a rundown of the rules so they don't get caught in anything and just prove to be a law abiding person.
@9MFCYW71wk1W
no i think they need to be seen if they are going to be an issue and cause problems like drug deals and ect
@Marcy46072wks2W
No, but they should be given the option to take it for incentives and provided a free course on American history.
@9MB8N8M2wks2W
All citizens should be required to pass the same test regardless of place of birth unless barred by a disability. Failure should require taking a free class on the subject followed by re-testing.
@9M98YFV2wks2W
Yes but they should be able to demonstrate that knowledge in ANY language. They will learn English as they need to.
@Kkbraden2wks2W
If the immigrant is planning to stay and is not on the temporary visa, they should be required to be working towards citizenship
@9M3WQ9X3wks3W
Yes, the same test should be required for everyone getting their license or in place of that, graduating high school.
@9LYXDQG3wks3W
As long they show that they are eligible and pass the citizenship but there should be levels to this though with each one progressively much harder which this depicts where they will score in schooling
I do think immigrants should be taught our language, history, and government, but it should not be a test involved, because most United States citizens couldn't pass a citizenship test.
@9LV24SL4wks4W
Yes, but it should cover basic ideas regarding the principles of the U.S. but not in a way to trick or intentionally reduce their chances of passing. Abolish discriminatory exams.
